Root Samsung Galaxy Nexus via ADB [How to][Tutorial]

Want to gain root access on your Galaxy Nexus. Here is aquick guide to help your root your Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone using ADB akaAndroid Debug Bridge. As ADB is available for all major platforms like Windows,Mac and Linux, Rooting Galaxy Nexus is possible on any PC running any of thesethree platforms.

If you don’t already have ADB on your mac or Windows PC,then check out the tutorial for Windows Hereand for Mac here.

After you have setupADB, you will need to download two files to complete the process.

Fastboot.ZIP

Galaxy Nexus Driver, RootFiles

STEP 1: Extract both the RAR files that you have justdownloaded.

STEP 2: Copy the required Fastboot file depending on yourplatform to ADB folders. For Ex: If you are using Windows, copyfastboot-windows.exe to ADB folder. Same in the case of mac and linux.

STEP 3: Turn on USB Debugging on your Galaxy Nexus.

STEP 4: Install Driver from the Galaxy Nexus Manual Rootfolder. File name is Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Moblie_Phones_v1_4_6_0.exe

STEP 4: Connect Galaxy Nexus to your computer via themicroUSB cable and check if ADB is working properly by running adb devices inthe terminal or command line. If it shows Galaxy Nexus, then you are good to goto next steps, else properly install ADB.

STEP 4: Turn off your Galaxy Nexus

STEP 5: Turn on your Galaxy Nexus in Bootloader mode [How todo that – Press 'volume up' and 'volume down' and ‘power button’ at the sametime] [See the image below]

STEP 6: Run the following commands in Windows.

fastboot-windows oem unlock

For MAC and Linux use the following commands

fastboot-linux oem unlock

fastboot-mac oem unlock

STEP 7: Press Yes on your phone once it asks yourconfirmation to unlock the bootloader.

STEP 8: Run the following command

fastboot boot boot.img

STEP 9: Your Galaxy Nexus will now reboot. Make sure to enableDebugging.

STEP 10: Run the following command, one by one and make sure to keep the right path to the files being pushed.

adb root

adb remount

adb push su /system/bin

adb push Superuser.apk /system/app

adb shell chmod 06755 /system/bin/su

adb shell chmod 06755 /system/app/Superuser.apk

adb reboot

STEP 11: Your Galaxy Nexus is rooted, enjoy

Want to unlock the bootloader of your Galaxy Nexus; here isa quick tutorial that should help you. Being a Nexus smartphone, unlocking thebootloader of Android 4.0 powered Samsung Galaxy Nexus is fairly easy, but youneed to be sure by unlocking bootloader wipes your phone, so your phone will beback to factory state after the following steps are completed. So make sure to makea backup the necessary data/SMS/Call log etc.

STEP 1: First download this file (r3-galaxynexus-superboot.zip)

STEP 2: Download PdaNet and install, itinstalls the required drivers to work with the following steps.

STEP 3: Extract the download zip to a folder using Winzip,WinRAR, 7Zip or any compressing application of your choice.

STEP 4: Turn off your Galaxy Nexus

STEP 5: Turn on your Galaxy Nexus in Bootloader mode [How todo that – Press 'volume up' and 'volume down' and ‘power button’ at the sametime] [See the image below].

STEP 6: Go to the extracted folder and press SHIFT and rightclick, then click on “open a command window here”.

Requirements:

Download SuperOneClick
Download KindleDrivers

Steps to root Amazon Kindle Fire

Unzip Kindle driver file.
Rename the unzipped folder to .android (Keep that dot in thefolder name)
Copy .android folder to C:\Users\”yourusername”\ (Yourusername is the user name on your PC)
Connect Kindle Fire to your computer with a microUSB cable. Youwill get the “can't find the driver” error from Windows, which will give youthe option to search from Windows Update. Cancel it and click
Disconnect on KindleFire (don’t remove the cable).
Then open Control Panel and go to Device Manager, here youwill find "Other Devices" section, Double Click Kindle and then clickon Update Driver.
You will be prompted, Choose “Browse my computer for driversoftware” and then browse to the .android folder and select next, you might geta warning about the file being unverified, allow it and finish.

Hard part is over now.

Now open the unzipped SuperOneClick folder
As your Kindle Fire will still be connected via usb cable, clickon the SuperOneClick app file.
Click on Root in SuperOneClick and just follow the easyinstructions. After finishing SuperOneClick will ask if you want to verify whethertablet has been rooted or not, select yes and you will see a superuserpermission box on your tablet, which means it is rooted.
You are done for now.

A native application development kit has been released for Android developers, offering a way to create certain kinds of high-performing applications for handsets running the Google platform.
This approach would not ordinarily produce a massive performance boost, but it does allow developers to reuse existing C and C++ code for Android applications.
Android engineer David Turner wrote in a blog post that the NDK, which is an adjunct to the standard Android software development kit (SDK), could be used for writing higher-performing applications, but also had its drawbacks.
"Your application will be more complicated, have reduced compatibility, have no access to framework APIs, and be harder to debug," Turner wrote. "That said, some applications that have self-contained, CPU-intensive operations that don't allocate much memory may still benefit from increased performance and the ability to reuse existing code. Some examples are signal processing, intensive physics simulations, and some kinds of data processing."

Huawei's Android Phone to come on T-Mobile

T-Mobile will release a smartphone running Google's Android operating system in Europe in the late third quarter, the phone's Chinese manufacturer, Huawei Technologies, said Thursday.

Huawei's U8230 will go on sale in Europe in the late third quarter and in China later, a Huawei representative said. It will have a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a Qualcomm chipset. The battery will offer longer life than any currently available Android phone, Huawei said.

The handset, first announced early this year, will work with the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), 3G networks used by operators in Europe and by China Unicom in China, the representative said.

Haier to launch H7 Android Phone

This is the fourth handset that will feature the Android operating system aside from the HTC Dream, Magic and Samsung I7500. LG to launch three Android phones

LG Electronics said tuesday that it plans to launch three Android-powered handsets this year, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The company also plans to release more in 2010.

While looking through their phone's camera lens, SPRXmobile says, users can see overlays with, for example, information on houses that are for sale, local bars and stores, healthcare providers and ATM's. Transdroid is an Android remote client for your BitTorrent application running on a server or home computer. Currently Transmission, µTorrent, BitTorrent 6+ and Deluge 1.2+ are supported. It can show the active torrents, pause, resume or remove them and new torrents can be added via URL or as an extra via an isoHunt-powered search.

The application is currently in extensive development and can be beta-tested. It is open-source and free.

Following is a screencast on how to install and use the new Transdroid application. It is a native app for your Android device (T-Mobile G1, HTC Magic, etc.) to connect to your home computer/server that is running a Transmission or uTorrent daemon.

HTC to launch more Android phone in India

HTC Corporation on Wednesday signaled that it is preparing to launch a couple of more new Android mobile handsets in the Indian market.
While speaking at the launch of HTC Touch Diamond 2 smartphone, Country Head, HTC India, Ajay Sharma signaled that the company is gearing up to launch more phones in India this year.
According to the company sources, the HTC will unveil its two Android powered smartphones - the HTC Hero and the HTC Lancaster - on June 24.
The HTC Hero will reportedly come Rosie, a new build of user interface. The HTC Hero will not have a physical QWERTY keyboard, but the HTC Lancaster will feature the QWERTY keyboard. The HTC Hero will also feature HTC's in-house developed TouchFLO 3D user interface.

Gmail for Android gets better

Google continues to fine-tune its mobile Gmail, and the search giant added a few ways for iPhone and Android users to get through their e-mails quickly.

The first addition is faster address auto-completion, which means typing the first few letters of a contact's name or e-mail address will lead to a pop-up of possible contacts. The process is expected to be similar to the desktop version, and it works by reusing previously fetched matches in subsequent searches.

The second improvement affects Android handsets with a physical keyboard like the T-Mobile G1.

HTC Hero to come on Orange

"We are part of the Open Handset Alliance (a consortium of software, hardware and telecom players devoted to developing the platform),"HTC India Country Head Ajay Sharma told reporters here while launching the smartphone HTC Touch Diamond 2.

On May 27, Google announced the availability of the Android 1.5 OS update (code-named "Cupcake") for T-Mobile G1 users at its Google I/O developer conference. The biggest surprise of the conference, however, was the goody handed out to attendees: an HTC Magic phone running Android 1.5 (also called the Google Ion). This slick smartphone is already available from Vodaphone overseas, and will be available in July on T-Mobile. Overall, first impressions of the HTC Magic's hardware have been mostly positive, but we sorely missed the physical keyboard found on the T-Mobile G1 (also by HTC). Nevertheless, Android 1.5 is a pleasing improvement.

Google also showed off Android 2.0 (with the delicious code name "Donut"). Version 2.0 will bring universal search, text-to-speech, and handwriting-gesture capabilities to the OS. Google has not announced an availability date for Donut.

Other manufacturers, such as Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson, have confirmed that they are on track with their Android device plans. At CTIA, Samsung said to expect Android devices in the second half of this year. Sony Ericsson recently confirmed to us its commitment to the Open Handset Alliance (Google's Open Source Business Alliance), and said that its Android handsets probably won't debut until 2010.

If you receive the following error during installation: "Android Phone not detected. Please make sure ADB interface is loaded without error in device manager", please look at driver installation troubleshootings.

3. My computer crashes and enters blue-screen.

This is an extremely rare problem caused by the Android USB driver. We do not have a solution for this unfortunately if it ever happens.

4. I do not see the PdaNet icon on my phone after PdaNet installation. Or how do I reinstall PdaNet on my phone?

On your phone point the browser to http://junefabrics.com/bin/PdaNet.apk and install it.

5. Does PdaNet support Mac?

The current version of PdaNet supports Windows only. We will try to support Mac in future updates. For now you will need to run PdaNet under VMWare or Parallel.

6. I am not able to access FTP in USB mode. What should I do?

Try to turn off Windows Firewall on the computer end and the problem should go away.

7. On Vista when connecting PdaNet crashes and gives me an error "PdaNetPC.exe has stopped working".

You got this error because some necessary system services have been turned off on your computer after Vista/XP is installed (either by you or by your system administrator) and PdaNet is not allowed to create a dialup connection. To fix this, go to Control Panel on your computer, select Administrative Tools then Services and turn back on all the Dialup or Remote connection related services (In particular one named "Remote Access Service").

Android OS is turning out to be more versatile than we would have predicted. R&D outfit Moto Labs have cobbled together an energy usage monitor using Flickr (famous image and video sharing website), a webcam and lots of Android special power.
Android is surely coming up in the oddest places. From Netbooks to desktop PCs, Sony Walkmans to Satnavs. The latest project from R&D skunkworks Moto Labs could be the most innovative yet. - The DIY Android Home Energy Monitor uses a bare-bones Android system running on a BeagleBoard (a simple PC on a single circuit board) combined with a wireless webcam.
Rather than tapping your electricity supply or plugging in to your meter to monitor usage, the device takes a much simpler tack - the webcam sits in your meter cupboard and points at the dial of your ‘leccy meter. Software on the Android box will take a picture of the meter at regular intervals and upload it to Flickr.com.
A Google gadget can then take the Flickr photo set, crunch the numbers and work out your power consumption. Feeling guilty about all the extra power you used to discover how much power you were using is an optional extra.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G to come in June?

As per the rumors in the blogging world, the Android-powered T-Mobile myTouch 3G, also known as the HTC Magic, the second mobile phone to run under Google's operating system, is rumored to finally see the light of day before the end of June.
As you may recall, the myTouch 3G is essentially a branded version of the HTC Magic, getting loaded with the latest Cupcake update of Android, an on-screen keyboard, and a large touchscreen display. It’ll probably be priced similarly to the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1).

Apple on Monday announced the next generation of its iPhone, boasting faster speed, longer battery life, more memory and a host of software improvements while cutting the price down to $99 for a basic model.

The announcement at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco came just two days after smaller rival Palm unveiled a phone called the Pre which many analysts had predicted would take a bite out of Apple's sales.

Android, iPhone developers await accelerator platform release

Web developers can tackle Apple iPhone and Google Android application-building on a development single platform with the pending release of the open source Appcelerator Titanium platform.
Titanium supports development for mobile, desktop, and Web applications, The same application built for one platform can run on the others. A preview release from late last year covered development of only Web and desktop applications while a beta release Monday adds mobile development capabilities for iPhone and Android.

Available in under the Apache Public License v2, the beta release enables developers to use skills in JavaScript, HTML and CSS to build native applications without having to know Objective-C or Java, Appcelerator said. General availability of Titanium is planned for later this summer.

"Consumers are devouring mobile applications as fast as developers can create them, but the real mobile tidal wave will hit when millions of Web developers are able to write mobile applications without having to learn a new programming language," said Jeff Haynie, CEO of Appcelerator, in a statement released by the company.

Applications developed on Titanium perform as native applications with native UI components, code compilation, and access to a device's storage, multimedia, input, and geo-location APIs. Other development technologies supported by Titanium include Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and third-party AJAX libraries for Mac OS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iPhone.

Applications built on Titanium can be tested and distributed through the Appcelerator Network, featuring cloud-based services for commercializing Titanium applications. While Titanium will remain free of charge, Appcelerator plans to monetize the product by offering cloud-based analytical and testing capabilities.

Analysis: Linux and Windows battle for netbooks

The war between open source and Microsoft Windows to be the operating system of choice for netbooks is hotting up, with some major skirmishes last week. But who is winning?

Netbooks running open source were the star of last week's Computex show, which saw a flurry of demonstrations of Linux, Moblin and Android-based devices, noted Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation.

“We don’t need to declare the year of the Linux desktop anymore. This week alone was pretty darn good,” Zemlin said, speaking of last week’s Computex in his blog.

“Having spent the week at Computex, the place where you see all the things that people are going to find in Bestbuy and Amazon six months from now, it is clear that Linux has a critical role in client computing,” he said.

Last week at Computex, many companies announced moves to use open source systems with their netbook products, Zemlin noted. Acer will support Moblin across its lineup, while Qualcom’s new smartbook idea was demoed with Android, Moblin and desktop Linux operating systems.

In addition, Dell launched the new Inspiron N Linux-based notebook, while Linux headed up the fastboot contingent too.

Microsoft's moves

But his open source enthusiasm is in stark contrast to news last week that PC World was pulling all Linux-based netbooks from its shelves in favour of devices running Microsoft Windows systems - although the shop will keep selling Linux systems online.

Asus also distanced itself from reported plans to use open source Android on its netbooks, saying the project was “not a priority”. That news came shortly after Asus and Microsoft launched a new marketing campaign claiming netbooks were “better on Windows”.

Earlier this year, Microsoft claimed it had taken 96 per cent of the market for netbooks.

Netbook changes hit Linux

Quocirca analyst Clive Longbottom told IT PRO that Linux is perfectly suitable for cheap and cheerful netbooks, and said open source gained a good head start over Microsoft – especially after it initially planned to let only three applications run at a time on netbooks running Windows 7.

But he added that netbooks haven’t stayed as initially envisioned, with the devices evolving into smaller laptops. “They have become far more powerful and functionally rich – and people want them to look and behave like the larger devices they are used to – not as some hybrid between their phone and the desktop,” he said.

“Microsoft has woken up and realised that this market is burgeoning – and that Linux could be a threat, and has responded by removing the limit of three apps, and also in making sure that the cost of the OS is not an overwhelming issue,” he said, adding that the arrival of the well-reviewed Windows 7 operating system will help Microsoft's market positioning even more.

Support issues

Longbottom added that Linux will suffer because there’s no real ecosystem of support around it, especially compared to that enjoyed by Windows.

“With Linux still seen as a techie tool for desktop use, and with no consumer magazines or consolidated messaging from the Linux brigade... there is no reason why a general consumer should go for Linux,” he said, suggesting average consumers prefer the ease of using Microsoft technology.

And if the demand is with Microsoft, then that’s where the retailers will focus, he claimed. “For the vendors, it is not worth their while becoming the spokespeople for Linux,” he said. “Standard rules of supply and demand apply, and these companies will go where the demand is - which just hasn't shown to be Linux.”

Motorola to introduce Android based smartphones in India

The US-based handset maker Motorola said it is closing its music application store --Motomusic -- in India.

"We are streamlining our portfolio and will be introducing Android-based smartphones that will allow us to give consumers and customers access to a broad ecosystem of experiences.

This means Motomusic and Soundbuzz are no longer core to our market strategy," Motorola said in a statement.

However, the Motomusic service in China would not be impacted, it added.

Last year, the handset maker had launched its portal Motomusic store in India offering more than 3,50,000 tracks and other multimedia contents like wallpapers and videos for download.

Motomusic India has put up a notice asking users to download all the songs purchased, back them up and redeem any vouchers and prepaid coupons before July 15.

"The last day of operation for the store is July 15, 2009. From midnight of July 15, the store will not be available for purchases or redemptions and your account and previous purchases will not be accessible," it added.

However, its rivals are gearing up to launch similar application-based shops in the country.

Indian gizmo freaks await iPhone Version.3

With Indians beginning to get a feel of the speed and features of third generation (3G) telephony, gizmo lovers are anxiously awaiting the launch of yet another version of the iPhone from Apple Inc.
And this could be as early as Monday, when Apple starts its much-watched five-day World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco.

Expectations are high that co-founder Steve Jobs would have orchestrated and finalised every moment leading up to the launch of the Version 3 of the iPhone. The grapevine is abuzz that the new offering will be named the iPhone Video.

"The mystery and the build-up to such Apple events add certain appeal to its products," said Nishant Arya, among the first in India to buy the official 3G version of the touch-screen iPhone from Vodafone last August.

"I have heard the rumours. If a new version of the iPhone is launched, I'll be back in the line the day they start selling it," the 22-year-old gizmo freak told IANS.

Jobs, 53, himself has been out of public view for over six months due to what doctors said was hormonal imbalance that saw him rapidly lose weight thorough 2008.

Apple says Jobs is unlikely to be back till the end of the month. But people haven't forgotten his surprise at the 14th edition of the conference - slipping a new hardware out of his jeans pocket in the middle of his keynote address.

"Perhaps the biggest surprise at this conference could be the return of Jobs who missed out on the keynote at the MacWorld in January," said Prasanto K. Roy, chief editor of the ICT publications of CyberMedia group.

"His return will not only charge up the fans but will also stamp content amongst investors," said Roy, a gizmo buff himself and a columnist on such devices.

Last year's conference had not only seen the iPhone 3G debut, Jobs had also said India will be on the global iPhone roadmap, much to the delight of Apple fans in the country who swear by its iPod, Macs and now the iPhones.

With 400 million mobile phone subscribers and some 12-15 million new connections every month, India had overtaken the US last year as the country with the second largest telecom network in the world after China.

For the moment, India is still struggling with slower second-generation (2G) telecom networks. This, despite 3G telephony in vogue elsewhere for more than five years.

But the state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), which provides telecom services in the national capital and Mumbai, and the pan-Indian Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) have made a beginning by offering 3G in limited areas.

The 3G mobile services not only allow much faster communications but also offer a wide range of applications such as high-speed Internet access, video calls, fast music and video downloads, interactive gaming and global positioning over the Web.

Now Apple fans are debating on what features the Cupertino-based company, known for its crafty uber-cool designs, will offer with its new iPhone.

A better camera is a given. There can be a secondary camera for video calls, as AT&T has recently upgraded its video telephony network in the US. Then the glossy finish of the previous version could be replaced by a matte look.

These apart, memory will also double to 32 GB if one goes by tradition, while an electronic compass may sport the home-screen.

"The Apple iPhone has come a long way since its first version. A lot of basic loopholes in terms of software have been plugged. The introduction of 3G as a hardware update has done the company good," said Roy.

"It will be interesting to see an upgraded device with decreased price tag."

Despite the focus on Linux netbooks in Taipei, Google was more engaged in convincing developers its store could rival Apple's and Nokia's, and its OS could challenge Symbian even in high end smartphones. Indeed, it refused to confirm reports that it has set up a group to work on Android for netbooks, even though some vendors like Acer are already promising netbooks running the OS. However, as Sony Ericsson has made clear with its decision to wait until release 2.0 to launch Android phones, we need to see this upgrade and some heavy duty multimedia capabilities before handsets based on the platform will get into the superphone league.

However, the conference saw Google highlighting the enhancements it plans to make Android go head-to-head with Symbian, and becoming more responsive to demands from the broader mobile developer community.

Android 2.0 is codenamed Donut and appears to be targeted at a wider range of devices than the current version, as it will support QVGA, HVGA and WVGA resolutions. This takes it beyond the 320 x 480 HTC phones and suggests MIDs or tablets that can display an entire web page on a mobile screen – lending further weight to the assumption that Android will soon turn up in netbooks.

Developers were out in droves to hear about Android, and as EETimes points out, one reason for their interest – and a warning signal to Microsoft – is the price. "You get a solid operating system, browser and GSM stack for free," said an engineer from Garmin, which plans a navigation-oriented Android phone (as opposed to $8 to $15 per handset for a WinMo license).

Though Android is very much a work in progress – and contrary to many open source ideals, nearly all the work is being done by a small and tightly controlled Google team of about 65 people – it is already considered more sophisticated than other mobile Linux environments, according to many developer attendees.

Google representatives variously said there would be 16, 18 or even 20 smartphones this year, and Rubin said that the devices would be made by eight or nine different manufacturers.

Although the US has led the drive to Android so far, with China Mobile about to launch a version of the HTC Magic soon too, Rubin thinks Europe will be the driving force. He said fierce competition in the region would drive operators to create “highly distinctive versions” of the Android phone, emphasizing the way that the software platform supports cellcos' need to design their own branded user experiences rather than being subservient to the vendors.

Filling up the app store

There are now about 4,900 applications available for Android, and Rubin explained there are three broad models for the app store. One, vendors can download Android for free and provide access to the apps, but not Google software such as Gmail. Two, they can sign a distribution agreement to include Google apps on the phone. And three, the 'Google Experience' will allow manufacturers to use the Google logo on the phone, but have no say over the applications available. He said most of the phones set for launch this year would use option two.

To boost the store further, especially as Ovi Store launches (and gets over its initial and embarrassing technical hitches), Google is looking for new ways to lure programmers. Nokia has run developer contests and all the stores are talking up their particular revenue share deals, but Google has taken a leaf from American Idol and is offering hard cash.
The second Android Developer Challenge (ADC2) was announced at the developer conference - entries for ADC2, using the current Android version, 1.5 or Cupcake, will compete for three top prizes in each of 10 app categories. There will also be an additional cash prize for the top three programs across all categories. The 'best in show' pot is $250,000, with $150,000 and $125,000 for the overall second and third placed products. The top place in each category gets $100,000. The Idol twist is an element of consumer participation.

Anyone with a Cupcake device – which currently means a Vodafone/HTC Magic, though Samsung and HTC/T-Mobile are close behind – can download and rate any of the competing apps in two rounds of judging, says CNET. Users' votes will account for 45% of the grand total and the Google-selected judges' panel for the rest.

Acer Inc., the world's second- largest laptop maker, will release a low-cost notebook powered by Android next quarter, said Jim Wong, head of information-technology products at the Taipei-based company.

Asustek Computer Inc., pioneer of the sub-$500 laptops known as netbooks, also has developed a model that runs on Google's software, chairman Jonney Shih said.

The adoption of Android-based netbooks may eat into Windows' share of about 90 percent worldwide for personal-computer operating systems.

Google's move escalates pressure on Microsoft as it to introduce Windows 7, said Calvin Huang, an analyst at Daiwa Securities Group Inc.

"This is a negative and may force Microsoft to lower the price of Windows 7," said Huang, who covers the computer industry from Taipei. "More and more vendors are adopting Android and non-Windows in their products, so this is a very good chance for Android to penetrate the PC market."

Android and iPhone users on application download spree

iPhone and Android G1 owners have downloaded an average of 23.6 mobile applications to their smartphones and use an average of 6.8 apps each day according to a new consumer study conducted by creative consulting firm Gravity Tank. After surveying more than 1,000 iPhone and Android users, Gravity Tank reports that 48 percent of smartphone owners shop for new applications more than once a week, and 49 percent say they use mobile apps for more than 30 minutes a day. That half an hour comes at the expense of more traditional technologies and media channels--32 percent of respondents said they now use their portable gaming devices less because they play mobile games instead, 31 percent said they read newspapers less, 28 percent use GPS devices less, another 28 percent use their MP3 players less and 24 percent are viewing less television.

HTC Magic aka T-Mobile myTouch 3G Review

IF TAIWAN phone maker HTC's first Google phone, launched previously, had been underwhelming due to a chunky design and other foibles, its second - the HTC Magic - is an absolute delight.
Apart from the Dream's slide-out Qwerty keypad, the slimmer Magic offers one other significant difference over its older brother - the latest version 1.5 of the Android OS, dubbed Cupcake. This version served up several key features absent in Dream, including video capture and stereo Bluetooth support, as well as speeds up interface response times. The result is a touch screen phone both powerful and fun to use.

The Goods:
Out of the box, the Magic's sveltness impresses. More compact and lighter than the iPhone 3G (116g vs 133g), it has a smaller 3.2-inch touch screen compared to the latter's 3.5-inch one, but the same half-VGA display resolution of 320x480 pixels.

A quadband phone (850/900/1800/1900MHz), the Magic is decked out with powerful connectivity features, including support for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), WiFi 802.11b/g wireless networking, Global Positioning System (GPS) and stereo Bluetooth. It has a built-in accelerometer that automatically tilts the display to either portrait or landscape modes depending on how the phone is orientated. There is also a nifty digital compass feature, which works with third party applications to provide an additional dimension to navigation.

The Android interface - with its distinctive extended desktop that unveils more real estate, widgets and icons when users flick either left or right across the screen - is superbly responsive. It is also intuitive and very easy to learn.

While lacking iPhone's multi-touch capabilities, the Magic's interface is arguably just as capable. Flicking on the screen produces an iPhone-like free-spinning scrolling experience, which makes selecting from long contact lists and surfing the Web quick yet precise.

Aiding navigation is a tiny trackball below the screen, which is particularly useful when selecting portions of text to edit or copy. It is a great feature if you need to use the phone while working out, when sweaty fingers prevent easy tap and flick navigation. The trackball also glows usefully with a gentle pulse to alert users of incoming messages.

A caveat for ladies though: the Magic, like the iPhone, has a capacitative screen, so may thwart those with long fingernails.

I also liked the Magic's haptic - or vibration feedback - mode, which is well thought out. For instance, tapping on icons to launch applications offer no feedback, but pressing and holding on them produces a mild vibration to signal that the icon is ready to be dragged. Typing on the software keypad yields snappy vibration responses.

Video playback is smooth, but the multimedia experience is slightly blunted by the use of rear-facing speakers, which make for a muffled sound when the phone is rested on its back. The omission of a regular headphone jack in favour of a USB type, which doubles up as a charging interface, is also disappointing.

Beyond interface niceties, the Magic's and Android's major strengths are the bundled software and Google application store, known as the Android Market. You will love this phone if you are a heavy Gmail, Google Calendar or Google search user. Gmail is push-like, with the phone beeping whenever new messages are dropped into your Gmail mailbox. A Google search toolbar on the desktop works just like the Web-based one, suggesting popular search terms in conjunction with the keywords you type.

Browsing for software was a cinch with the Android Market - easier and quicker compared to the just-launched Nokia Ovi application store with my Nokia E71 phone.

Elsewhere, GPS navigation worked reliably. The 3.2-megapixel camera produced decent outdoor shots in bright daylight, but grainy ones indoor. This is not helped by the lack of a camera flash. Video quality is so-so, with captured clips tending to be jumpy.

Available in glossy black or white, the Magic is attractively curvaceous, but its plasticky shell may not be as robust as, say, the Nokia E7, which has more metallic reinforcements.

The bottomline: The HTC Magic is an excellent touch screen phone that goes toe-to-toe with its rivals, and it is one which will get better with the evolution of the budding Android platform. Next on the Google menu is reportedly an OS iteration codenamed Donut, which could add voice search and handwriting gestures. The HTC Magic is available here from this month for $1,048 without operator plan.

Open Kernel Labs launches "OK:Android" platform

Google is planning to release version 2.0 (code-named Donut) of its open source Android mobile operating system this year. While presenting the latest stage of development at the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco, Google announced that Android 2.0 should be ready in approximately three to six months.

Set to take place on June 24th in London, it is thought that the press conference could mark the unveiling of the new Hero mobile phone – HTC’s third Android powered handset after the million-selling T-Mobile G1 and the HTC Magic.

An early release for the Hero suggests that HTC is looking to establish itself as the market leader for Android phones before rival devices appear from Sony Ericsson and Samsung, whose I7500 is believed to be arriving imminently.
